Travelling South with the Family

If you are planning a winter vacation down South in the next little while, you are not alone! Statistics show that approximately 45% of Canadians travel South in the winter. The top 5 travel destinations for Canadians are:

  1. Hawaii
  2. Miami
  3. Puerto Vallarta
  4. Phoenix
  5. Las Vegas

Travelling with children requires a different approach than if you're just going with your partner, or a group of friends. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you get ready for the sand and sun:

Pack for summer

Some items from last summer might still fit your child, but if they had a growth spurt over the fall and winter season you'll need to stock up on some of the essentials:

~ Swim suits/trunks (rash guards offer the best protection in the sun)
~ Shorts
~ Tees/tanks
~ Comfy sandals
~ Sunhat
~ Sunscreen
~ Sunglasses
~ First aid kit with antiseptic wipes, bandaids and your preferred fever/pain reliever medicine

Your local kids store may have some of what you need as their new spring/summer stock starts arriving in January. Here at Kids Trading Company, we start getting spring goods in January, and especially in our second hand section where the selection comes in even quicker than our new styles.

Getting there

Whether you are travelling near or far, it helps to be prepared to keep your little ones entertained. We have gathered some great travel-friendly snacks here, and some fun on-the-go entertainment ideas here.

Making the most of it

If you are travelling a few hours out of your time zone, it pays off to keep everyone awake as long as possible the first night. Go for a walk outside or find a playground to play in.

Make sure you plan in some extra time for any activities you are planning. Things always take a bit longer when you have the kids with you, and it's worth it to take the time to stay relaxed - that's why you went on a holiday to begin with (well that and escaping winter)!

Allow your child to document their trip with a sturdy, child friendly camera! It is so much fun to look back at your trip through their eyes! Older kids might enjoy creating a travel journal, collecting post cards is a great way to document your experiences!
