If you subscribe to our emails (subscription box on the bottom of the page), you have seen us declare that we are committed to helping you (and ourselves too) end the annual Holidaze! So what is a holidaze and how do you avoid it?
Well, a Holidaze is when you spend the month or so leading up to Christmas and New Years, in a daze. It happens because you add so much extra stuff to your plate during this time. You and your family's schedule doesn't exactly ease up this time of year (with the addition of concerts, recitals and holiday events it's rather the opposite). Add to that shopping for gifts, wrapping those gifts, cooking and baking your holiday favourites, cleaning and decorating your house and, and, and... I can see your eyes glazing over just thinking about it!
So how do you avoid the holidaze? We have three tips:
Write your holiday manifesto
Make a list of the things that are really important to you and your family during the holidays. Are there certain traditions you do together as a family that you want to make sure you have time and energy for? Are there particular dishes or treats that you know you want to include this holiday season? Schedule all of it. Add family events in your calendar and give yourself plenty of time to prepare if needed. As for food or baking is there anything you can make early and freeze?
Finish shopping early
Try to commit to having your holiday shopping done by the end of November. Yup, I said it. Can you imagine the relief you would feel, just by knowing that you don't have to spend December chasing gifts in packed malls? One way to accomplish this is by shopping local, as small businesses are less likely to be crowded and often offer services such as free gift wrapping.
Schedule You time
You know the drill from the airplane safety instructions: Put your own oxygen mask on before helping others. The same rule applies here. You must take care of yourself before you can efficiently take care of everyone else. Schedule in time that allows you to take a break, whatever that looks like for you. Maybe it's a walk outside, maybe it's a bubble bath, or a coffee date with a friend. Find more great ideas here!
