Your Word of the Year

New Year Parenting

It’s a brand new year, and that always gives us that feeling of starting fresh, starting new habits and letting go of old ones. I talked about the habit of balancing your health account last week. Now I have another tradition I would like to share with you:

Choosing your word of the year

I’ve seen this tradition pop up here and there, and while it’s not necessarily something that will make a huge change in your life, it will change your life in a subtle, gentle way. I think it’s a great way to stay focused on your goals every year, whether those goals have to do with your health, relationships or career. The idea is to choose one word, that will guide you and re-focus you throughout the year, as you might get side tracked from your goals. One word that will set your course, and move you forward.

Choosing your word

Don’t let perfection get in the way of progress. It might feel intimidating to pick one word to represent your whole year! But don’t fret over it. For some people their word will be very obvious because there is a certain situation they are going through and the word is part of a solution they are striving for. For others, it might not seem so obvious. My best suggestion is to just take a moment where you are by yourself, and give yourself some quiet space. If you meditate, do it during your meditation. Just still your mind, and observe what words just pop into your mind. It might be a completely random word, but don’t write it off. Just make a mental note (or write it down if you’re worried you’ll forget). I’ve offered just a handful of examples in the image above, but just see that as an inspiration to get you started.

Maybe it was just one word that came through, maybe there were a few. Look at them and see which one resonates with you the most. Is it something you’d like to see more of in your life? A quality you would like to nurture in yourself? The important thing to remember is that the word should resonate with you. It should feel right for you.

Living your word

Once you’ve chosen your word, you will start noticing every time you find it in a magazine or hear it from others. See this as a little sign or nudge from the universe that you need to re-focus, or remember your path. When you find yourself having to make a decision about something, remember your word and see if that helps make your choice clearer. You can keep your word completely private, or you can share with family and friends (or leave us a comment below with your word so we can see the beauty of what’s happening in your lives). If you journal, write it in your journal, and maybe find examples of how the word showed up in your life. If you’re active on social media and don’t mind sharing, share your word with your friends and tell them every time your word manifested in any way.

I hope I’ve inspired you to set a positive theme for this new year!
